TRANSFER FROM HOME OR BIRTH CENTER TO HOSPITAL

If you’ve planned a home birth, no doubt your midwife will advise you about the possibility of needing to transfer to a hospital to deal with possible complications. Only about 10 percent of women who plan home births transfer to a hospital after labor has begun. This is usually for nonemergency reasons, like a slow progression. Good communication and coordination between your original provider and the one who may be joining your team or taking over your care is key and allows the family to trust and work cooperatively with the providers in the new setting. It’s common practice for parents who are planning a home birth to tour and get familiar with their potential transfer hospital, which helps minimize potential anxiety.

If you are giving birth in a birth center, they likely have an agreement with a nearby (or on-site) hospital in the event that you need to be transferred.
